Radio Babies

Individual listening experience has taken precedence over the era of sitting together and listening to music or singing along. There are lesser instances of coming across a group playing antakshri and more of a family sitting together and yet listening to their own devices.

Transistors earlier that were hand held were used by many to carry music, information and entertainment wherever they go. However, people gathered around it as well to share the experience of music, hawa mahal or News and sports as well.
It was dissemination of information. Broadcasting living up to its purpose.

However as we move on in time.. TV, newspaper and radio - all forms of typical broadcast have had to change their form and style. And I might correct myself here and actually say that the way they are being consumed has changed. Not much (sadly) has been done to the content or presentation of it per se.

This has been said a number of times in the last few years. However, I would like to speak about radio here as I have spent significant time of my life working with this medium..and talk about how it is the closest 'broadcast' medium to social media and lends itself so easily to digital.

It might come as a surprise, but as a radio presenter - we were always asked to speak to one person. We might hear jocks say things like " Namaskar Mumbai" - but it is not how a true blue radio person will address his or her listener. This is the closest we get to 'individual listening experience'  - much touted reason for streaming to become popular.
Compare that to print...and I don't think a newspaper editor is asked to pick a headline that appeals to one person at a time. It is meant to grab eyeballs.. The online version being the click-bait.

What I mean to say is - radio as a medium can take various avatars and yet be what it is. Just like paper is replaced by phones and tablets, a radio listening device is now a mobile phone. Podcasts, audio books, dj mixes - are all radio babies. However, because it is not a visual medium, it does not lead you, you lead the process - by using your own imagination. You are an active participant in the process of consumption and that lends itself to automatic customization.

With democratization of content creation - no one is making content to appeal to a particular attractive TG anymore. (TV is forced to do that to balance cost) Online, people just wish to create something fun, thoughtful, interactive and easy to consume.

This is exactly what radio used to do. We had people picking up the mic and just share. Before we became the medium that took itself too seriously - we were just a platform giving a voice to some interesting points of view. Much like Twitter. We were also the original platform for stand up comedians - people giving simple, short and mostly funny Commentary on the current economic, social, cultural happenings.

Our biggest strength lies in the fact that we are local. Much like the local publications of a small town like Jodhpur. They don't care what happens at Cannes. They do however want to know about the latest happenings within the royal family of Jodhpur and may be the mela that's coming up...and yes, they do get a kick when a neighbor gets featured in a story.

Social media lends itself to that. You can "follow" people in your area. Digital news can be consumed by typing in "simla news" on Google. But it's not the same. Not to mention, the experience of hearing your own name on radio...Priceless.

Talking to someone - an art most of us will soon lose out on, is one of the basic necessity of a human being. Radio gives you the space to do that. All I have to do as a jock, my primary responsibility, is to give you an ear. Not to just speak at you. But speak to you. Authentic complete anonymity (no ip address I can track) when you speak to me and yet you are heard by many - another trait social media prides itself on.

So come. Speak to me. Here is the mic. I'll throw in a song if you please.

Now how many mediums can really do that for you?

Can I go on-air in Bangalore?

My friends in America have been tuning into City1016 since a long long time and swear by it. It's the only one I know that broadcasts the same content they do on radio - also online. So while they sit in America, they are listening to radio of Dubai  - with content about another city / country etc - but seem totally ok with it! So why do people keep talking about local content, importance of the city or town or whats happening around them?

When I shifted to Bangalore, of course I met people here in the radio industry. I wanted to check out the possibilities. But when I thought of going on-air, I double checked with myself. I could have done it easily since I have done it before and it comes naturally to me. But should I do it? It bothered me that I did not know the city well enough. In fact, what if I pronounced the area name wrong while giving a traffic update? Marathalli is pronounced differently even by locals here. What is KR Market? what is sold there? - later get to know its kind of like Crawford Market - but have I been there? Have I had the coffee at Brahmin Coffee Bar? And I decided, its just not fair. It is unethical to go on-air with half baked information and just faff around about how great Bangalore is and how lovely the weather is.

When I was in Mumbai, I saw a lot of these RJs who were from various parts of the country - and somehow never thought of this then. People from Delhi, Jaipur and Raipur - could easily get away with a 'kasa kay' or a 'bhidu' - which is ok. Also, Mumbai as a city is very cosmopolitan. It does not belong to anyone or any particular language is not spoken there. It is also very tolerant. Oh my, before I get emotional over the city - what I am trying to say is that the profession of a Radio Presenter needs to be given more respect and due credit.

As of today, we are happy yapping about anything from silly Bollywood gossip (I wanted to give an example but thankfully I am totally out of touch and have no clue whats going on in that world) to stupid contests with even stupid-er give-aways. I was frankly not ready to do the same thing again. When I began doing radio - this is not what it was about. It was about your spontaneity, language, love for music, love for the people, wit, humour and personality. YOUR personality - not something you make up for 4 hours of the day. It was about connecting with the people in your city. It was all about the company. It was about going ga-ga about the poha sold outside Vikhroli station, the sea breeze at Bandra Bandstand (and the couples enjoying it).

But then, if I only have to talk about Ranbir's next movie and Preity Zinta's third dimple - I think I can do it anywhere in the world. I really don't need to belong to the city. But my question is - if you don't belong anywhere, how would you make the listeners get a sense of belonging?

As for, can a jock be from another city.. I haven't made up my mind about it. I have given myself 2 years to know the place and the people before I even think about going on-air in Bangalore. Wasted my time? May be. Worth the wait? Will only know if someone offers me the mike again ;)  Getting to know the city - Priceless.

Bengaluru ki hawaein...

Listening to radio in Bangalore (the new town I belong to now) is interesting. You switch from Kannada music and talk to complete English and then some Hindi too.

Fever 104 is the latest station to change gears and move into the Hindi space now, after having tried a complete Kannada format. They started off in the city as a Hindi-English station and have changed formats quite a bit in the last few years of their existence. Radio One is the only station here that catered to the Hindi speaking audience here. Now they have competition. They are being hesitant to leave this space here, though in Mumbai and Delhi they have converted into a complete English channel now. (Back to where they began as Go 92.5) And are they sounding great or what! Many say it is their last attempt to shine before wrapping up because they had completely sunk as a Hindi channel in metro markets overall.

However, coming back to Fever @ Bangalore. They are also not sicking to one positioning in all markets now. In Delhi, Mumbai, Kol - they are "All About the Music" - but here, they are trying to own the Bollywood space with "Baap of Bollywood"! Oye fm mind you, is "Sabse Filmy" in other markets. They are not a part of the Bangalore circuit, so Fever has sneaked in this idea for the upcoming Hindi speaking audience here.

The clarity that they will stick to Bollywood and taking a stand with a positioning is great. I just wish they had been a little less noisy and less cliche. But then that's what BOllywood is all about, isn't it? Noise and cliches.

The music by the way is great at 104. That itself could make it for them. Provided the Amitabh and Shahrukh dialogues don't interfere too much.

Happy..listening to competition!

I know most of the people will think that I am happy listening to competition because may be they are doing things that are not that nice and in comparison I am feeling good about stuff I have been putting up.
But its something else, quite the opposite actually.

I just finished an overview of what the competition has been doing and was simply delighted. In terms of content, everyone is working on something different. Bringing the vibe of the city for your consumption in different ways. Someone is talking about how elder people should be familiarized with mobiles for their safety, someone is running into Sachin's house for a byte, someone is telling you how Ranbeer likes to show off that he shares his birthday with Lata Mangeshkar and bytes of her telling us why does not want to sing much now. There are richshaw-walas, bhikaris and prostitutes going on-air at the same time.

The only complain I that I have is from our Hindi Music Industry - please give us new and more importantly good music at regular intervals. Give it to me baby! aha..aha!

Ganapati, Navratri and now Diwali.. I hope the air-waves keep getting brighter for all of us.

New Music is BACK!

Suddenly my dad has started complaining that he does not get to hear the music of 3 Idiots on FM. "It has such great tracks! Jab dekho koi purana gaana sunaate rehte hain!"

Well, I had to explain it to him technically. And there is a history to it too.
When RadioCity* started playing music from the 90s around 9-10 months back, everyone was laughing at them. The music sounded out of place and the station started sounding dated. But then suddenly, RadioCity started picking up numbers (in the RAM* Reports)

The 'strategy' City had, was not to turn into a Retro station, but play music that is melodious and creates a soothing and relaxed environment. They had conducted research and figured out that people listened to music mainly because they wanted to relax. (So their reaction to the same was to get rid of 'Dhinchak' music) I assume.

Red* and Mirchi* were not bothered. They were still holding strong positions but City's upward travel was too fast to go unnoticed for too long. MANY made the mistake of attributing the success in numbers to the late night show hosted by Manish Valecha as THE reason of City gaining numbers. It was an adult show and to top it -it played ONLY English Retro. Suddenly, (supposedly) according to RAM, everyone was listening to City at nights. Listenership also looked good in the afternoons when their mix of music had more of 90s and other mellow numbers.

Now, the station looking down in the dumps at that point was Fever 104. They were still giving Format Radio to Mumbai. Same product 24x7. The one thing that was their advantage was 40 Mins of Non-Stop Music route (brought to you by Virgin) - which gave them the advantage of playing maximum music in one hour and also maximum music without an ad-break. Great product. Not working.

They had a close look at their competition. And like an intelligent opponent.. imbibed what was good in their competition and only did it better. They had dropped English music long time back. Now came a point when they started playing music of the 90s AND Retro as well. The placement, repetition etc can be explored in some other post, cause that is another chapter to study altogether.

Now Fever started looking upward. Specially after the line-up changed and emphasis was given to the Afternoon and Night shows. (again, something important to learn and study) People sampled the new (but previously famous) jocks and ofcourse, the music, that was more (as compared to other stations) and the right mix. It provided variety and (according to some) - a surprise element for listeners.

The only question on EVERY one's mind was, what the f&$# is Fever upto? How is the TSL so high? How is it suddenly Number 3-2-huh!!almost 1!? Now competition started keeping an eye out or lets just assume glued their ears to Fever. And what did they discover? AH! Old music?! Why not? We can do it too. And yes, we will do it MORE if not better than them! And yes, also, people were slowly realizing that Music indeed is the king.

So eventually, Mirchi worked out 'Dheemi Local' - where they would play music from the 90s for straight 4-5 hours in the afternoon and bring in a Retro show with a bang! You all know it - Purani Jeans- the number 1 show in Mumbai as of today. Incidentally, Mirchi is No.1 (RAM stats) in Mumbai now. (with Afternoon and Night shows doing very well and better than the rest of the day-parts)

There was a time in between (specially when no new movie, and so, no new music was getting released) when even Red tried their hands at 90s. One per hour. Big* did some experiments too. And Radio One has NOW launched something whereby every alternate song or so is a Retro number!

A lot of time has passed since RadioCity made a change in their music and since then, they have rolled in and out of the top 5 in Mumbai. But, every station has experimented with their music and programming since then. So you hear songs ranging from 10-40 years old music more than you would get to hear a latest song. One should not forget that this is also a result of a complete lull in the music scene for quite a long time and listeners needed to be provided with SOME music. On an average, most stations have decreased the number of new songs played every hour / in a day. There are smart programmers like Mirchi and Big who have a good mix and somehow manage to escape the loop. But then others are being caught sleeping over their database!

Because of older songs being heard more often, the recent songs (5-10 years old) are also sounding older than they used to. Databases are not being refreshed. (specially the libraries) However, NOW - new and fresh music is being churned out of Bollywood at a better pace and better quality. No one knows how long this happy season will last, but while its here, the listeners are not being allowed to enjoy it as much as they want to!

Ajab, 3 Idiots, Chance Pe Dance, Ishqiya, Veer, are flooding the market and sitting their like sweets at a shop, getting wasted, since the shopkeeper is not displaying it to the shopper enough!

"Behti Hawa sa tha woh" from 3 Idiots has not got any rotation in radio stations! Can you believe it?! People are dying to listen to it people!!

Anyway, so to address my dad's grievance, I would like to state that as long as RAM doesnt show that X radiostation is doing well because they are playing NEW songs at some arbid time. And more importantly, unless some OTHER station does not try it out and become successful as well, there is a dim chance that music policies would change in the coming days.

Bhaiyya, sab hai RAM bharose!
